The Russia GP Rhapsody

This week I had a lack of inspiration

So, writing this feels like a slight liberation.

For what I’m about to say, please don’t knock me

I got bored when I watched the drivers race in Sochi.

This was race 10 out of 17, although it seems the calendar changes week by week

Ricciardo had his best ever start in 5th place,

I had high hopes that he’d begin to dominate.

It was the end of Mercedes’ rein of locking out pole positions,

Because Verstappen qualified 2nd with a nice time cushion.

There was drama pretty early when Sainz ploughed through a wall,

He tried to go through the chicane but didn’t make the right call.

Stroll lucked out as he was rear-ended so both drivers retired for their cars to get mended.

We had a brief safety car which mixed things up,

Hamilton received a 10 second penalty, he was out of luck.

I wasn’t really sure what this was all about,

Neither were the commentators, or Lewis who began to pout.

All I know is he made the same mistake twice,

And he was sulking over the radio for paying the price.

He bottomed out in P10 but of course gained his position again.

Ricciardo was still in 5th which gave me immense pleasure,

Even with high track temperatures and hot weather.

He was eventually overtaken and lost his spot,
I’d love to see him in a competitive car giving it all that he’s got.

Instead he was held up in the pits, he plummeted to 14th place all the way from 6th.

The young guns were competing with each other,

Albon, Russell and Norris tussling in a row like 3 little brothers.
I honestly thought there would be a crash, but they eventually made some space and stayed at the back.

I’ll admit I was surprised when we were shown the backdrop by Sky TV,

I never thought a Russian autodrome would be alongside the sea.

The local driver Kvyat still hadn’t pitted by lap 31,
He jumped from P11 to P3 on his first set but dropped back to P8 after his tyres were done.

Ricciardo suffered a time penalty because he just wouldn’t lift,

He went off track and suffered a time penalty, but still finished in 5th.

Bottas was setting some fastest laps and nabbed himself another 1st.
“This is a nice moment to thank my critics - **** you” – what a strange triumphant outburst.

Verstappen gained another trophy as he was close behind,

And Hamilton came in 3rd although he still almost cried.
Perez finished in 4th with a point to prove.
With his seat up for debate and a potential 2021 move.
